At Arvé Aesthetics in Greenville, SC, anal neurotoxin therapy is performed with strict attention to anatomy, safety, and patient dignity. This is a specialized physician-performed procedure designed to reduce excessive tension of the internal anal sphincter, improve comfort, and support quality of life for patients experiencing functional discomfort related to sphincter hypertonicity.
What Is Anal Neurotoxin Therapy?
Anal neurotoxin therapy uses precise, targeted injections of Jeuveau® to temporarily relax the internal anal sphincter. By reducing involuntary muscle tension in this area, the treatment can meaningfully improve comfort during daily activities and intimate experiences without affecting overall bowel function in the vast majority of patients.
Jeuveau® is selected specifically for this application because of its highly localized dispersion pattern at a 1:1 dilution ratio, which minimizes the risk of the toxin migrating beyond the intended treatment site. This precision is essential when working in close proximity to anatomically sensitive structures.
All procedures are performed by our physicians in a private, closed-door treatment room with full attention to comfort, discretion, and clinical safety.
What Conditions May Benefit?
Anal neurotoxin therapy may be appropriate for patients experiencing:
- Pain or discomfort with receptive anal intercourse: excessive sphincter tone can make penetration uncomfortable or painful, and temporary relaxation of the internal sphincter can significantly improve this experience
- Internal anal sphincter hypertonicity: involuntary tightening of the internal sphincter that causes chronic discomfort, pressure, or spasm
- Anal fissures (adjunctive treatment): elevated resting sphincter tone is a known contributor to the persistence of anal fissures by reducing blood flow to the anoderm. Neurotoxin therapy can reduce this tension and support healing as part of a broader treatment approach.
- Functional anorectal discomfort: chronic tension, spasm, or functional pain in the anorectal region where sphincter hypertonicity is a contributing factor
What to Expect
Consultation
The best way to confirm candidacy is through a one-on-one consultation with one of our physicians, who will review your medical history, discuss your symptoms, and determine whether this treatment is the right approach for your specific situation.
The Procedure
The treatment is performed in a private room with the door closed. You will be positioned comfortably on your side in a relaxed, supported position. A topical numbing agent is applied prior to injection to minimize discomfort throughout the procedure.Jeuveau® is injected at four anatomically precise locations corresponding to the 12, 3, 6, and 9 o’clock positions around the internal anal sphincter. The injection depth is targeted specifically to the internal sphincter, and the use of Jeuveau® at a 1:1 dilution ratio is an intentional clinical choice to minimize any risk of toxin migration beyond the treatment site.
The procedure is quick, discreet, and performed entirely in-office. Most patients find it very well tolerated. You are able to return home immediately following the appointment.
Duration
Most appointments take approximately 45 minutes from start to finish.
Results
Results typically become apparent within 2 to 4 days due to Jeuaveu’s quick onse of action, but can take up to 10 days as the neurotoxin takes full effect and muscle tension begins to reduce. The therapeutic benefit generally lasts 4 to 6 months or longer, after which repeat treatment can be performed to maintain results.
Who Is Not a Good Candidate?
Anal neurotoxin therapy may be a good fit if you are experiencing chronic discomfort, pain with receptive intercourse, or functional symptoms related to internal anal sphincter tension that have not responded adequately to other approaches. Good candidates are generally in good overall health, have realistic expectations about the nature and duration of results, and are able to follow post-treatment guidelines.
This treatment is not appropriate for patients who:
- Have a known allergy or sensitivity to botulinum toxin or any of its components
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have an active infection in or around the treatment area
- Have undergone surgery in or around the anal or rectal area within the past 2 weeks, or have not yet fully healed from such a procedure. This includes hemorrhoidectomy and similar anorectal procedures.
Anal Neurotoxin FAQs
Will this affect my bowel control?
The vast majority of patients experience no impact on bowel control. Because Jeuveau® is injected precisely into the internal anal sphincter at a carefully controlled dilution, the risk of affecting continence is very low. Some patients may notice a mild, transient looseness in the first 24 to 48 hours following treatment as the muscle begins to relax. This typically resolves on its own. If you experience any concerns beyond 48 hours, we encourage you to contact our team. To reduce the risk of any functional change in the early post-treatment period, we advise avoiding activities that could increase the risk of fecal incontinence for the first 3 days following your appointment.
Is receptive anal intercourse safe after treatment?
We advise avoiding receptive anal intercourse (including use of sex toys) for 2 weeks following treatment to allow the injection sites to fully settle and reduce any risk of disruption to the treated tissue.
How long does it last?
Results typically last 4 to 6 months or longer. Individual results vary depending on anatomy, the degree of hypertonicity being treated, and how the body metabolizes the neurotoxin. Repeat treatments can be performed to maintain results.
Is there downtime?
There is no significant downtime. You can return to most normal activities immediately. We recommend avoiding strenuous physical activity for the first 24 hours and following the post-treatment guidelines provided at your appointment.
