What Is Anal Neurotoxin Therapy?

Anal neurotoxin therapy uses precise, targeted injections of Jeuveau® to temporarily relax the internal anal sphincter. By reducing involuntary muscle tension in this area, the treatment can meaningfully improve comfort during daily activities and intimate experiences without affecting overall bowel function in the vast majority of patients.

Jeuveau® is selected specifically for this application because of its highly localized dispersion pattern at a 1:1 dilution ratio, which minimizes the risk of the toxin migrating beyond the intended treatment site. This precision is essential when working in close proximity to anatomically sensitive structures.

All procedures are performed by our physicians in a private, closed-door treatment room with full attention to comfort, discretion, and clinical safety.

What Conditions May Benefit?

Anal neurotoxin therapy may be appropriate for patients experiencing:

• Pain or discomfort with receptive anal intercourse: excessive sphincter tone can make penetration uncomfortable or painful, and temporary relaxation of the internal sphincter can significantly improve this experience
• Internal anal sphincter hypertonicity: involuntary tightening of the internal sphincter that causes chronic discomfort, pressure, or spasm

The Procedure

The treatment is performed in a private room with the door closed. You will be positioned comfortably on your side in a relaxed, supported position. A topical numbing agent is applied prior to injection to minimize discomfort throughout the procedure.

Jeuveau® is injected at four anatomically precise locations corresponding to the 12, 3, 6, and 9 o’clock positions around the internal anal sphincter. The injection depth is targeted specifically to the internal sphincter, and the use of Jeuveau® at a 1:1 dilution ratio is an intentional clinical choice to minimize any risk of toxin migration beyond the treatment site.

The procedure is quick, discreet, and performed entirely in-office. Most patients find it very well tolerated. You are able to return home immediately following the appointment.

Duration

Most appointments take approximately 45 minutes from start to finish.

Results

Results typically become apparent within 2 to 4 days due to Jeuaveu’s quick onse of action, but can take up to 10 days as the neurotoxin takes full effect and muscle tension begins to reduce. The therapeutic benefit generally lasts 4 to 6 months or longer, after which repeat treatment can be performed to maintain results.

Who Is Not a Good Candidate?

Anal neurotoxin therapy may be a good fit if you are experiencing chronic discomfort, pain with receptive intercourse, or functional symptoms related to internal anal sphincter tension that have not responded adequately to other approaches. Good candidates are generally in good overall health, have realistic expectations about the nature and duration of results, and are able to follow post-treatment guidelines.

This treatment is not appropriate for patients who:

• Have a known allergy or sensitivity to botulinum toxin or any of its components
• Are pregnant or breastfeeding
• Have an active infection in or around the treatment area
• Have undergone surgery in or around the anal or rectal area within the past 2 weeks, or have not yet fully healed from such a procedure. This includes hemorrhoidectomy and similar anorectal procedures.
