GHK-Cu is a naturally occurring tripeptide bound to copper. In laboratory research, it has been shown to signal fibroblasts, the cells responsible for producing collagen, and to influence pathways involved in collagen synthesis, tissue remodeling, and antioxidant activity. Its effect is not a single action but a broad influence across thousands of genes associated with repair processes, which is part of why it draws interest across both topical skincare and injectable research settings. The strength of the topical evidence does not automatically transfer to injectable or systemic use, which involves different dosing, absorption, and safety considerations entirely.
Sermorelin
Sermorelin works by binding to receptors on the pituitary gland, prompting it to release the body’s own growth hormone in a pulsatile pattern that mimics natural secretion. This is a meaningful distinction from direct growth hormone administration, since it relies on the pituitary gland’s own regulatory feedback rather than overriding it. That feedback dependent mechanism is also why patient selection matters. Sermorelin is not appropriate for everyone, and its effects depend heavily on a patient’s baseline pituitary function.
Tesamorelin
Like Sermorelin, Tesamorelin works through the growth hormone releasing hormone pathway, prompting the pituitary to release growth hormone rather than supplying it directly. It is structurally modified to resist enzymatic breakdown, which gives it a longer active window than Sermorelin. Its FDA approval is specific to reducing visceral fat in HIV associated lipodystrophy, a mechanism tied to how the compound affects fat metabolism in that patient population. That approval does not extend to general fat loss or body composition use in patients without that diagnosis.
MOTS-C
MOTS-C is unusual among peptides in that it is encoded by mitochondrial DNA rather than nuclear DNA, and it appears to act as a signal between the mitochondria and the cell nucleus during metabolic stress. Preclinical research has explored its role in insulin sensitivity and exercise adaptation, largely in animal models. Human trial data remain limited, and its mechanism, while biologically interesting, has not yet been established in controlled human studies.
BPC-157
BPC-157 is a synthetic peptide derived from a protein fragment found in gastric juice. Preclinical research has explored its potential role in angiogenesis, growth factor signaling, and gut lining repair. The bulk of this evidence comes from animal and in vitro models. Human pharmacokinetic data, standardized dosing, and long term safety information are notably sparse relative to how widely the compound is discussed online.
Peptides Compared to Other Trending Compounds
Peptides are frequently mentioned alongside other categories of compounds that work in entirely different ways. Understanding the distinction matters for anyone trying to evaluate claims responsibly.
Peptides vs. SARMs
Selective androgen receptor modulators, or SARMs, are synthetic compounds designed to bind androgen receptors and mimic testosterone’s effects on muscle and bone. They are not peptides, they are not naturally occurring, and none are FDA approved for human use. Peptides and SARMs are often marketed in the same online spaces, but they are structurally and mechanistically unrelated.
Peptides vs. Hormones
Hormones such as testosterone or growth hormone act directly on target tissue. Many peptides, by contrast, act upstream, signaling the body’s own glands to produce or release a hormone rather than replacing it outright. This distinction affects both the physiology involved and the type of monitoring required.
Sourcing and Compounding Quality
Because most peptides are not commercially manufactured pharmaceutical products, they typically reach patients through compounding pharmacies rather than a standard prescription filled at a retail pharmacy. Understanding this pathway is part of understanding peptide safety.
- Compounding Pharmacy Type: Compounded peptides generally come from state licensed pharmacies that prepare medication for an individual patient’s prescription, operating under sterile compounding standards set by USP General Chapter 797.
- Certificate of Analysis: A reputable source will provide third party testing documentation confirming a compound’s identity, purity, and potency for each batch. The absence of this documentation is a signal to look elsewhere.
- Accreditation: Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board status reflects an additional layer of independent quality oversight beyond minimum state requirements.

What Results Realistically Look Like
One of the most common misconceptions about peptides is the expectation of fast, dramatic change. In reality, peptide therapy, where clinically appropriate, tends to work gradually and depends heavily on the specific compound, the patient’s physiology, and consistency of use. Growth hormone secretagogues, for example, often require weeks of use before patients notice changes in sleep quality or recovery, and skin focused peptides typically follow a timeline similar to other collagen supporting treatments, with visible change building over months rather than days. Claims of rapid transformation should be treated with the same skepticism applied to any other overstated medical claim.
Regulatory Standing at a Glance
As of July 2026, most peptides discussed in wellness and aesthetic settings remain outside full FDA approval. Sermorelin, marketed as Geref, and Tesamorelin are the only peptides referenced on this page with an FDA approved indication, each for a narrow, specific use. A July 2026 FDA update restored several peptides, including BPC-157, GHK-Cu, and MOTS-C, to a category that allows compounding pharmacies to legally prepare them under physician supervision. That change affects legal compounding access. It does not mean any of these peptides have completed the clinical trials required for full approval.
Guided by Evidence, Not Hype
The details above, mechanism, administration route, sourcing pathway, and realistic timeline, are exactly what gets lost in social media discussion of peptides. A qualified medical evaluation accounts for all of it: a patient’s full medical history, appropriate lab work, contraindications, and an honest conversation about what a given peptide can and cannot reasonably be expected to do.
